Nick Hawkins

Nick joined Danoptra in November 2007 as Director of Legal Services, dealing additionally with Government Relations/Public Affairs and Compliance issues for the Group and its subsidiaries.  Nick is a Barrister, called to the Bar at Middle Temple in 1979, who was previously Head of Gambling Law at Halliwells LLP, a large national law firm, based in their City of London office. He has extensive experience of legal, compliance and public policy issues at a senior level, both in plcs and in Government and Parliament. Before Halliwells, Nick had been with the specialist Gambling and Leisure law firm in the City, Harris Hagan, and before that with the largest international law firm in Oman, AMJ.

Nick had practised at the Bar from Chambers in Birmingham and Northampton 1979-1986, then became a senior corporate Counsel specialising in Banking and financial services as Company Legal Adviser, Access credit cards (JCCC) 1987-1989, and Group Legal Adviser, Lloyds Abbey Life plc, 1989-92. From 1992-2005, Nick was a Conservative M.P. He was appointed to positions in Government and Opposition, and promoted, by 4 successive Tory leaders, serving in Government at the MoD and DNH (now DCMS), and in many roles in Opposition, the most senior being Shadow Solicitor-General. He served twice as Shadow Minister for Gambling, and was a member of the Bill Standing Committee which undertook the detailed clause-by-clause scrutiny of what became the Gambling Act 2005.
